QUANTUM COMPUTING AND COVID-19
UNDERSTAND THE MECHANISMS THAT GOVERN DOCKING BETWEEN THE VIRUS’S OUTER LAYER AND THE CELL MEMBRANE, OR DOCKING OF A DRUG TO THE VIRUS’S SURFACE
The COVID-19 virus has disrupted research in science and technology at a level not seen in modern times. I will summarize how quantum computing may help with today’s cybersecurity and tomorrow’s virology efforts. In cybersecurity one may use quantum technologies to protect against hacking, which is now particularly important given the increased internet reliance. In virology, quantum computing would enable consideration of much more complex molecules. This includes understanding the mechanisms that govern docking between the virus’s outer layer and the cell membrane, or docking of a drug to the virus’s surface. It also allows the creation of accurate datasets for drug discovery via neural networks.
About the speaker:
Dr. Mark Jackson is the Scientific Lead at Cambridge Quantum Computing and a faculty at Singularity University. He received his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from Columbia University. He then spent 10 years researching superstring theory and cosmology. To promote the public understanding of science, he founded the science crowdfunding platform Fiat Physica and non-profit Science Partnership Fund. He is also a Director of the BoldlyGo Institute and Advisor to Futurism Lab.
